Form and Style in the Visual Arts !
Types of design in various arts !

To design means to make thinking visual, to add value, to simplify, to clarify, to modify, just like transforming a prose into poetry. There are different types of design in many various arts and in order to understand them better Thomas Munro wrote " Form and Style in the Visual Arts", trying to describe not only these designs but the aesthetics in arts as well.
Therefore, the designs are categorized in Visual, Auditory, Audiovisual and Design based on Suggestive Thematic development.

The Visual design in separated in many categories starting with the Visual static surface design. It's components are line, color and shape. It's mostly represented in 2D, flat,or curving surfaces.  This design consists of STRIP DESIGN, which is a long and narrow, extended design that can be developed by addition or division. It is represented in 3D, flat or slightly surfaces and may be purely abstract and non representational.
BOUNDED AREA DESIGN is a limited 3D or flat design that its a finished work. The representation of it is especially important. It's components are line, color, solid shape or texture. These design differs from conventional, formal ornamentation in being asymmetrical, irregular, free flowing, suggesting things, expressing thoughts and attitudes.
ALLOVER DESIGN is unbounded in 2 dimensions, it tends to flow from one side to another ignoring it's edges and corners. It can be flat and 3D, representatively and suggestively, abstract,
or intermediate between the two. Allover design is usually decorative.
The Visual, static solid design is the second category of Visual designs which is represented in 3D and has extend in thickness or depth, as well as length and breadth. In addition to line, color and texture in this design are used the masses, voids and surface shapes. This design consists of EXTERIOR DESIGN, which gives us the opportunity to see different things from different points, the INTERIOR DESIGN, surrounding or partly surrounding the observer through each it can change the angle of vision, the COMBINATION of these two and finally the INTERMEDIATE between surface and solid design, a 3D development.
The Visual, mobile temporally developed design is the last category of Visual designs which includes the MOBILE SURFACE DESIGN, a 2D design that gives the feeling of motion through pictures, shadows plays and colors and the MOBILE SOLID DESIGN, a 3D design that presents movement in space and time.

The Auditory design is represented in determinate temporal sequence and consists of MUSICAL DESIGN which is based on rhythm, pitch or timbre that shows us that every sound or even noise can be treated as e theme, repeated and contrasted with others. The WORD SOUND DESIGN is considered as one of the two main factors in literally design and finally the VERBAL MUSICAL DESIGN.

The Audiovisual design involves the AUDIOVISUAL SURFACE DESIGN, a combination between the nibble visual patterns and music, and the AUDIOVISUAL SOLID DESIGN, a combination between mobile solid patterns and auditory patterns.

So, each one of us may find one of these categories the best, may look at that design with another eye, from another point of view. But still they all are important and they change your perspective about design and art itself. To me design can be a lots of things. Art, aesthetics, sophistication and simplicity. It is so simple that's why it is so complicated.
